30. Reflections
Overall, it was difficult to find acurate sources that also had good, helpful
information. There were some good site that helped me out alot. One that really helped me was the freedom writers fondation website (http://www.freedomwritersfoundation.org/). This site help me having the correct info about the freedom writers and any other information i need .
28. Reflection Paragraph On Findings and Process
During my research, I have discovered a lot, but not as much as I had hoped to.
There was hardly any information about why the book was banned, and what the
names of the groups were that banned the book. I just learned how and why teachers got in trouble for using the banned book. I think with reading the book and doing this project, it let me get a better onsite on what the students in room 203 had to live and go thru .
During my research, I felt like I had learned a lot. I discovered that there are way too many teenagers out there, dealing with problems. Adult problems that they shouldnt have to go thru or face. I think with Mrs. Gruwell having the student do the life diaries , it let them really express how the feel and their views on the things that they are faced with everyday .

27. Finding Paragraph 3
I asked how did Mrs. Gruwell come up with the students having life diaries ?
She said "I chose to use books written by, for and about kids who lived in wars, such as Anne Frank, Elie Wiesel and Zlata Filopovic (a young diarist from Bosnia and Herzegovina) in a response to a comment by a Freedom Writer: “Sometimes, I feel like I live in an undeclared war.” I wanted to encourage my students that the best way to fight that war was through words and not weapons."

26. Finding Paragraph 2
One question that I asked was How did Mrs Gruwell even get room 203 when she started at Wilson High ?
She said "I chose to be an English teacher as a response to the Los Angeles riots following the Rodney King Verdict. At the time, I as living in Newport Beach, an affluent seaside community of California, but I chose to teach in a community that was directly affected by the riots. Wilson High was in transition: many students were being bused in from housing projects; many students had lost friends due to the rise of gang violence. Startlingly enough, there were 126 murders in Long Beach the year before I began teaching. "

25. Finding Paragraph 1
One of the questions I asked was what was Mrs. Erin Gruwell's first impression of the students when she got to room 203 ?
She said "I was a little naïve to the situation before me. I was a young, fresh teacher who was incredibly excited to be in her first classroom. However, I soon became overwhelmed by the differences that my students and I seemingly had. I felt sad for my students because their lives were so dramatically different than my own. "

22. Quote, Paraphrase, Citation
“Evil prevails when good people do nothing.”
This is saying that if there is nothing good being done then it is over looked by all the the bad things that are being done.
This is saying that if there is nothing good being done then it is over looked by all the the bad things that are being done.
19. Message Passge #1, Explanation, and Citation
The book shouldn't be banned cause it give kids a look at what people had to go thru. Also, what they had to face and shows kid that life is not easy. It alos lets kids know tht there is always someone out there to help you. Especially if they are going thru the something or some thing similar.
17. Controversial Passage #3
In entry #3, the writer discusses the presence of racial
tension, and an extreme form of ethnocentrism which results in murder,
greed and civil unrest: “The war has been declared, now it’s a fight for money,
power, and territory; we are killing each other over race, pride and respect.”
Gang violence is a fact of life in present-day America, and claims the lives of real people everyday. Its not just the people in the gang , its the one who have nothing to do with the gang or its lifestlye .

16. Controversial Passage #2
In entry #2, the writer goes into detail about the
clearly drawn lines between “categories” of students. Various lifestyles,
including the behavior and dress of students, begin to divide them into cliques.
Beverly Hills or Disneyland are the rich white kids, China Town are the Asians,
Da Ghetto are the blacks, etc.
The racial divisions and segregations of urban society manifest themselves in smaller form, made apparent by the divisions of the high school students. They are simply imitating the manners and social habits of their families and the world in which they live.

15. Controversil passage #1, Explanation, citation
In entry #1, the writer refers to a white student who has entered the classroom
and is in the corner. The writer talks about the white student as a minority:
“for his entire life he’s been part of the majority, but as soon as he stepped
into the room, he became the minority.”
The writer shows an understanding of the social status based on race, and the negative tension that can arise from having to live with that reality. These notions of separation prevent human connection, not even offering an opportunity for relationships.

14. Quote, Paraphrase, Citation
“It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that if you tell kids they're stupid--directly or indirectly--sooner or later they start to believe it.”
The quote is saying no matter how much you say it , either to the student or pharse it a different way, you are calling the student stupid and one they are just going to believe it and not even try to do good because of the fact that they think they're stupid.

12. Book Review
The Freedom Writers Diary was written by The Freedom Writers, about 150 students who named themselves in honor of the civil rights activists the Freedom Riders, with their teacher Erin Gruwell. The Freedom Writers along with their teacher waged war against a community that deemed these students as worthless and unteachable. I think the worst thing was that even many of the teachers at Wilson High School labeled them as at-risk and unsavable. This diary turned book consists of anonymous diary entries that Gruwell required the students to write in class. The entrees give an inside view into the lives of the students. I was flabbergasted at some of the situations that the students endured at home. But when I really thought about it I wasn’t surprised. There were students who were molested, homeless, drug addicts and abused. However they all shared one common factor---they all wanted to be wanted.

10. Describe The Ban
Challenged in the Howell (MI) High School because of the book's strong sexual content. In response from the president of the Livingston Organization for Values in Education (LOVE), the county's top law enforcement official reviewed the book to see whether laws against distribution of sexually explicit materials to minors had been broken. The county prosecutor wrote, "Whether these materials are appropriate for minors is a decision to be made by the school board, but I find that they are not in violation of the criminal laws."
9.Describe Your Book
My book is about the lives of teenagers and the hardship they face. It tells what they go through and shows us how they try to survive just to make it to the day. My book shares the diries of these students nd their teacher so we can get a better look at hat the have to face day to day. Its also about how their eenglish techer comes in and help them out in as many ways as she knows how.
